Viral Shield Pharmaceuticals, Inc.
Preventing the Spread of Viruses Around the World

THE COMPANY: Viral Shield Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (“Viral Shield” or “VSP”) was founded in March 2002 to develop superior anti-viral products that both prevent and treat infections due to envelope viruses including Herpes, Influenza and HIV. Viral Shield’s patent-issued and patent-pending technology is based on breakthrough, proprietary science developed at Johns Hopkins University.

THE TECHNOLOGY: The technology is based on the discovery that the Company’s lead compound, 2 hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin (2-HP-BCD) is a safe and effective tool to kill envelope viruses by destroying lipid rafts vital to the membranes of these viruses. Topical products have been formulated for prevention and treatment of Herpes Labialis and Herpes Genitalis.

PROOF OF CONCEPT CLINICAL TRIALS: Dermatologist-monitored trials on patients with recurrent Herpes labialis and genitalis indicated three strong beneficial effects without toxicity:

  • When applied in the presence of sores, 2-HP-BCD reduces the duration of epidermal outbreaks by 50% (eight day outbreak reduced to four days)
  • 2-HP-BCD abolishes local and referred pain within 2-3 hours
  • When applied during the prodromal period, 2-HP-BCD prevents epidermal outbreaks associated with pain and sores

BUSINESS MODEL & COMMERCIALIZATION STRATEGY: Initial focus on prevention and treatment of Herpes Labialis and Herpes Genitalis infections introduced sequentially into markets in (i) Asia, (ii) Europe and (iii) North America. Later focus on prevention and treatment of Influenza and AIDS.

PIVOTAL INDUSTRIAL ALLIANCE: In 2003 an alliance was formed between VSP and Spirig Pharma Ltd., the leading dermatological pharmaceutical company in Switzerland. VSP and Spirig Pharma are currently conducting Phase IIA clinical trials on Herpes Genitalis in Europe, scheduled for completion in Q1, 2007.

MARKET POTENTIAL: The markets that can be served by the Company’s Herpes products in North America, Europe and Asia are estimated to exceed $2.5 billion annually, all of which are currently not well served by existing products. Further upside potential will come from products developed for the prevention and treatment of Influenza and AIDS.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY: Strong patent portfolio with two issued patents and two pending patents containing broad claims for prevention/treatment products, pathogens and disease states.

TECHNICAL SHEET
Advantages of 2-HP-BCD Technology for Anti-Viral Therapy in the Marketplace

VSP’s breakthrough technology represents a profound disruptive innovation in the field of anti-viral therapy applied to envelope viruses, including Herpes, Influenza and HIV.

General Advantages

  • 2-HP-BCD works by a new mechanism of action to destroy (kill) all envelope viruses. These include Herpes Simplex Virus, HIV, Influenza, Respiratory Syncitial Virus, Hepatitis B & C, SARS, West Nile, Pox and other envelope viruses.
  • 2-HP-BCD is the only topical drug with significant demonstrated efficacy in the prevention and treatment of envelope viral diseases.
  • The mechanism of action works on the lipid composition of the virus, which is an entirely new approach which avoids the hyper-mutability potential of HSV and HIV leading to significant drug resistance issues.
  • 2-HP-BCD changes the entire paradigm of viral treatment by preventing the entrance of the virus into the body, through reproductive and respiratory routes, where it takes up “lifetime residence” in the genetic components of the host organism.

Advantages for Herpes Labialis (HL) Prevention and Treatment:

  • Commercialization of products that both prevent and treat HL with dramatic power will not only replace the existing products for treatment of HL but, because this is the first effective topical treatment for HL and the first effective preventative for HL, will increase the world-wide markets for HL products from $0.8 billion to an estimated $3.0 billion.

Advantages for Herpes Genitalis (HG) Prevention and Treatment:

  • Provides a new scientific and medical approach to Herpes Genitalis treatment by adding dermal treatment to systemic Acyclovir treatment, i.e. the disease is treated on two fronts, both from the exterior (2-HP-BCD) as well as the interior (Acyclovir). In fact the efficacy of dermal treatment with 2-HP-BCD is faster and cheaper than the oral medication. This disruptive technology should, alone, increase the world-wide market for HG products from $1.8 to at least $3.6 billion.
  • Thus, a new class of anti-viral drugs (2-HP-BCD) displaying a new complementary mechanism of action to Acyclovir therapy, is a bonanza in the prevention and treatment of Herpes Genitalis and may be invaluable for numerous customers who do not wish to take daily Valtrex® medication for the rest of their lives.

Advantages for Influenza Prevention and Treatment

  • By commercializing simple nasal sprays, throat gargles and pulmonary aerosols with 2-HP-BCD, these products may eliminate the transmission of Influenza virus during epidemics and greatly diminish the development of “rogue viruses” that may become even more lethal than HIV.

Advantages for Prevention and Treatment of AIDS

  • A birthing product containing 2-HP-BCD will prevent maternal-fetal transmission of HSV and HIV during childbirth.
  • A vaginal microbicide containing 2-HP-BCD will provide breakthrough beneficial effects in prevention of HIV transmission through sexual activity.
  • A medical device, similar to a kidney dialysis machine, containing 2-HP-BCD attached to polymeric beads will significantly reduce HIV titers in sick AIDS patients.

Because of these considerable advantages, Viral Shield will be successful in establishing a disruptive innovative technology to solve major unmet needs in the health care industry by providing profound solutions for “jobs needing done.”
