THE COMPANY: Viral Shield Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (“Viral Shield” or “VSP”) was founded in March 2002 to
develop superior anti-viral products that both prevent and treat infections due to envelope viruses including
Herpes, Influenza and HIV. Viral Shield’s patent-issued and patent-pending technology is based on breakthrough, proprietary science developed at Johns Hopkins University.
THE TECHNOLOGY: The technology is based on the discovery that the Company’s lead compound, 2
hydroxypropyl beta-cyclodextrin (2-HP-BCD) is a safe and effective tool to kill envelope viruses by destroying
lipid rafts vital to the membranes of these viruses. Topical products have been formulated for prevention and treatment of Herpes Labialis and Herpes Genitalis.
PROOF OF CONCEPT CLINICAL TRIALS: Dermatologist-monitored trials on patients with recurrent Herpes
labialis and genitalis indicated three strong beneficial effects without toxicity:
- When applied in the presence of sores, 2-HP-BCD reduces the duration of epidermal outbreaks by 50% (eight day outbreak reduced to four days)
- 2-HP-BCD abolishes local and referred pain within 2-3 hours
- When applied during the prodromal period, 2-HP-BCD prevents epidermal outbreaks associated with pain and sores
BUSINESS MODEL & COMMERCIALIZATION STRATEGY: Initial focus on prevention and treatment of
Herpes Labialis and Herpes Genitalis infections introduced sequentially into markets in (i) Asia, (ii) Europe and (iii) North America. Later focus on prevention and treatment of Influenza and AIDS.
PIVOTAL INDUSTRIAL ALLIANCE: In 2003 an alliance was formed between VSP and Spirig Pharma Ltd., the
leading dermatological pharmaceutical company in Switzerland. VSP and Spirig Pharma are currently conducting Phase IIA clinical trials on Herpes Genitalis in Europe, scheduled for completion in Q1, 2007.
MARKET POTENTIAL: The markets that can be served by the Company’s Herpes products in North America,
Europe and Asia are estimated to exceed $2.5 billion annually, all of which are currently not well served by
existing products. Further upside potential will come from products developed for the prevention and treatment of Influenza and AIDS.
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY: Strong patent portfolio with two issued patents and two pending patents containing broad claims for prevention/treatment products, pathogens and disease states.
